There is no definite amount, but usually I have about 15 - 30 layers.

usually between 30-50 for me. Every different sound gets its own channel. Less layers = easier to mix. Also its easier to be clear with what you're trying to convey with your song. I'm finding I used to use way more tracks before and now that I've been aiming to simplify my workflow, I've been getting better results.

even in my most complex stuff I only end up with less than 30 layers. And the "muddiness" that you're experiencing might just be from the sheer number of sounds that you include in your track.

There's no set number, you can use as many or as little as you want. My tracks usually range from 50-100 but it all depends on how I want the finished product to sound.

Not trying to sound like a dick but does it really matter?

Less = more.

The less, the better. Use your ears and see for yourself.
Stop overdoing shit. Stop downloading new plugins for the sake of it. Your fancy stereo enhancer won't make you any better musically, your hard work will.

It really depends on what sound or genre you're going for. Personally, I don't think you should over do it, unless maybe if you're producing a synth-heavy dance track. If your sounds are good quality, well mixed, and full, you won't need 30-40 tracks to make a good sounding song.

During the course of making the track, I probably have 30 or more layers, but I end up muting/deleting the vast majority of them by the end.

I usually end up with a group called "Floor" which is where I throw layers that I'm not ready to throw away, but not actually using any more.

Thats a bold statement haha. It really depends on how much detail you add. I've had tracks where my drum bus alone was like 25 layers (with percussion etc). Most of my tracks tend to have 80/100 channels, depending on how many arps, leads, chords and other instruments i use.

i produced some commercially released songs that had 130+ tracks, as well as songs that only had around 20 tracks.

I don't think there is a "must" of a certain track count, layering /stacking can help up creating a wall of sound, but it also harder to balance sometimes

Less is more!!!
Less layers,more processing on them.
This is my opinion and my workflow :)

How many layers?

For starters it will have some dependence on the style you are making.  Like everything else in production, there is no right answer, but if you are consistently pushing 50 tracks, you probably need to do some cleaning up and organising your work better.  EG, you tend to get lots of one-off effects like swooshes etc on their own track, each with a reverb.  Instead, send them all to a bus with a single reverb, then flatten those layers together into a single track.  Saves a lot of confusion later.

You have to be organised from the very beginning otherwise you will find yourself in all sorts of trouble towards the "end" of a project

I also like to be minimalistic with this. It teaches you to learn synths a bit better, because you can't "hide" them behind the next layer.

...but don't overdo it, because that's called being a d***k.
