I just select both WAV and MP3 in the render settings on FL Studio. Usually does a good job at it.

this isn't an option in ableton though! ableton only allows lossless formats

Big fan of Audacity! Like seeing the waveform (not sure if thats available in Max) but I've been using it for awhile so for me I'm just comfortable with it (as most are I would assume).

Haha it's funny, I used to record (poor sounding) raw guitar tracks & (usually okay sounding) concert DVD's straight into it for easy Mp3 rips. Oh the Windows XP days!  8)

I have a script set up that automatically converts every .wav or .aiff file in my Scraps folder to 320kbps .mp3. It uses the command line program ffmpeg which is pretty standard for audio and video conversion.

I actually made a step by step on a reddit post regarding this, so if you're interested in doing this as well and you're running OSX: https://www.reddit.com/r/ableton/comments/3x24s1/best_way_to_go_ableton_mp3/cy2jzw2

At least I'm getting something out of this computer science degree  ;)

I use NCH Switch, which users the LAME MP3 encoder to convert to MP3, has worked well for me.

I have used Audacity in the past, even Cubase's MP3 export.

Total Recorder Pro is a great multipurpose tool.  Batch file processing, encoding format changes with tons of settings, file normalization, audio stream capture, and much more.  It's not free but I feel like I've gotten my money's worth from it.

I just select both WAV and MP3 in the render settings on FL Studio. Usually does a good job at it.
At the same time o_O or you mean rendering first wav, then mp3?
FL Studio actually has the ability to render both at the same time, yes.
