go monitors

even the best headphones fatigue my ears like crazy over time. I spend a lot of time (probably too much) on mixes and using headphones always has me changing the mix constantly throughout the session.

I'll literally mix on apple ear buds and a subpac if I need something quick.

I've heard this apple bud anecdote a lot and i'm tempted to try (and i mean even then, they're not bad quality headphones, they actually sound decent to me). What about us folks who don't have subpacs?

tangent: this is so cool that i'm seeing tons of names i recognize and producers that actually know what they're doing.

I think for me it's just about doing mixes on headphones that I listen to all my other music on. They may not be the best in terms of quality, but I know exactly how hard kicks feel in them, I know exactly what all my other fav producers stuff sounds like in them etc. etc., so I sort of just try to use my ear memory and do the mix naturally.

Also, I highly recommend looking into a subpac, even with monitors. It's really changed the game for me from a home studio perspective. I can't tell you how many times I've come back working on something on a plane or whatever and thinking it's amazing and then realizing how fucking awful and muddy the low end was. I promise I don't work for subpac, it's just an amazing product :D

Oh and I would hardly say I know what I'm doing, I just think I've found a way to make it work for me ;P

90% of the time I stick to my DT770s, 10% of the time it's the KRKs.
It could be caused by the quiet hours too or mostly because I get the most ideas at night.  8)

I find a combination of both works best myself, I tend to use my DT770s/HD650's for detail (things like tiny changes to attacks and harshness) then the monitors to get a more wholesome picture of how the mix sounds - but the latter is pointless if your room is a dud.

when I finally convinced my parents to let me have monitors inside my room, I got so happy. Its much easier being able to find out what sounds good, when u can ab from ur headphones to ur speakers. Oh yeah, and listening to reference tracks on different shit is great too, making sure u your mixes or masters sounds as full.

I switch between my m50 headphones and hs8 monitors when producing, mixing and mastering.
Who gives a fuck?

No matter what your using to monitor your mix as long as you have a decent
grasp on your frequency ranges and a good ear for the kind of balance
your looking for in your mix I think you'll be ok.
I'd definitely say that a pair of both headphones and monitors is a must.
I have to do the headphone, earbud, laptop, car, and monitor test before I can say thats a wrap.

I use ATH m-50s and krk rp5's. Mostly the krk's while composing the track as a whole, and then i use my headphones for the mixdown and finetuning as I go. Unfortunately I cant use them for too long since my ears get fatigued very quickly and they get very uncomfortable after a couple of hours... So I guess i'll look into previous posters suggestions and invest in a new pair!
Cool signature.

It's always good to produce with both good reference cans as well as good studio monitors. In fact, it is best to do so, as every setup sounds different, and, indeed, one reference will be different from another.

It's not good to always use one or the other when monitoring. It is good to use a combination of both proper monitors, and reference cans. Switch between the two when producing, and listening to your mix.

So do invest in proper studio monitors, they will help your productions sound better on any system in the end, once mastered and released.
Yes I'm a fukkin Pokémon fan in case you'd not gathered that.

I'm a little biased as my cans are there for reference only 99% of what i do is on my monitors but you should definitely try and invest in both.

Right now, I currently own a pair of AKG k240 and a recently purchased ATM m50. I really do like producing using the m50s, but I wonder if getting a pair of monitors would be beneficial for me in the long run. I was looking at the Rokit 8s, but I hear they end to exaggerate the low end a bit too much. In addition, I heard producers like Juventa can produce using only headphones and can still achieve a really good mixdown. Any thoughts?

Have you tried looking at Yamaha HS7/HS8s? I went from M50s to HS8s and believe me there is a night and day difference.
Stop overdoing shit. Stop downloading new plugins for the sake of it. Your fancy stereo enhancer won't make you any better musically, your hard work will.

A combination of both headphones and monitors works really well. Like Xilent, I'm doing most of my mix on headphones, but the monitors are crucial for sensing sound space and stereo; two things that headphones do a piss-poor job of representing. Even without a decent room or acoustic treatment, getting monitors really improved my mixes.
Build it, and they will come.

Getting used to how a mix should sound in headphones you know is very handy .The monitors are only as good as the room you put them in,but with headphones you can be anywhere .Having said that ,a combination of both is the way to go . I get a lot of ear fatigue when using headphones, plus no one has developed a DB meter for headphones so ears tend to take a Beating . Treat the room rather than getting really expensive monitors (unless you can afford both)

Whatever you decide, just remember to listen to your mixes in monitors, headphones even if they're cheap, car speakers, anywhere to make sure it's sounding good.
