{{{What is this sound? Some kind of LFO synth? Song: Heart of a Lion, Kid Cudi}}}

I am wanting to create a sound like this one. It has something to do with LFOs with a degree of instability.

[Shows itself at 0:25-0:30 as it rises in pitch and does so again a few times throughout such as 1:25 and 3:00]

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_gv1rIduxw

There is also a similar sound in Lana Del Rey-Born To Die https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bag1gUxuU0g
at 1:30 and 1:40 (and at times throughout)

Whatever the technique is for creating this type of sound, it was used on both of these tracks of course in their own altered ways.

If anybody knows exactly what this is help me out and share with me. Thank you.

How would I go about making this kind of sound?.. Main sounds Im interested in, 1.) The beginning with those fast detuned plucks I believe they are.. 2.) The synth pattern right after that for the main beat. 3.) I am super super fascinated with the odd sound he has in adds.. the first time you hear it is directly at the 0:45 mark. Its a weird synthetic vocal type thing?.. I really really want to know for that last one there.

Also I dont have many synths to use, but the synths I do have are pretty powerful. Serum and Harmor (FL User) And I do have Sytrus but I dont really know what id be doing with that, I never really use it. 99% of the time im only using serum for synthetic sounds, besides ambient pad samples and what not.

Any help here would be very appreciated!!

hi oneyejoe, welcome to the forum.

the pluck in the beginning sounds like just a lowpassed plucky saw playing that one chord. i hear some automation on the cutoff and decay for sure, as well as the pitch for that detuning. there's some reverb coming in the last few bars, which is why it all kinda blurs together along with the opening envelope.

the main bass sounds like a sawwave bass. the squelchy hits are a resonant filter, probably a lowpass too, being activated. the base sound itself should be pretty simple, the key will be in how u process it. tasteful distortion/ compression. a lot of dark techno is simple sounds like that, processed in a lot of real subtle ways. looking up deadmau5's streams where he made 'imaginary friends' might help give you ideas!

that vocal hit sounds like a reallyyy short syllable from a pack like vengeance. it sounds like there's some kind of stereo delay going on that makes it wider to contrast that mono bass. to play up that sorta watery artificial sound, you might also mess with some of FL's sample time stretching algorithms (speeding up/ slowing down samples to fit that 16th note), vocoding, or pitcher. any of those can help introduce that.

Does anyone know how to make the pluck from Jay Pryor's Teenage Crime? Preferably using sylenth or Serum.
