GET AN AUDIO INTERFACE.
All you really need is an interface.

I'm gonna add to this, any decent PC with enough of RAM and a great audio interface will do wonders for you.

I've been working on the same mid-2012 macbook 13" and only just recently upgraded my ram and hard drive a few months ago from 4GB to 8GB and I've almost never had a project crash on me since then. If you have a decent interface to do all the thinking for your audio apart from just your PC will help a lot too. This is just my experience. Most of my VSTs are very CPU/RAM hungry..

The interface part is really important though.
Can you guys suggest an Audio Interface for me?

GET AN AUDIO INTERFACE.

My production PC is a VAIO laptop more than five years old. The specs:
*Core i7 1.73 GHz
*8 GB RAM (upgraded from 4GB, but it worked fine before)
*7200 RPM drive (1 TB) no SSD
*Desktop Pod HD (guitar effects processor) as an audio interface

An interface is the easiest way to reduce latency. Other than that, if you've got plenty of decently fast storage for samples and projects, you're golden. In fact, unless you're using huge sample banks or layering more than 50 synths in every project, don't even worry about RAM.

All you really need is an interface.

I just built a new desktop (with the thread Babas linked) and I'm moving all my stuff on to that, but I'm definitely keeping this laptop around for future DJing and producing on the go. I kind of want to trash it out of spite for Sony, but regardless who put the parts together, a solid machine is a solid machine. Maybe I can pry the VAIO emblem off the back.
Yeah, i've been producing on a laptop for 2-3 years and I didn't had that much trouble.

I use a PC specifically for music production.  I have FL Studio, VSTs, Splice, etc. loaded on but thats it.  And I'll use the internet too.  I keep it as clean as possible so that the CPU doesn't work so hard.

Seriously, just build one yourself. Laptops are only good for if you are frequently somewhere else.

i7 2600k, 16gb ram and a few SSDs and HDDS.

It's a Hackintosh. Pretty great but I could use a beefier CPU. Looking to pick up a laptop.
Stop overdoing shit. Stop downloading new plugins for the sake of it. Your fancy stereo enhancer won't make you any better musically, your hard work will.

Before I got into production I was really into building my own computers and gaming.
These days I use it solely for producing and it might be overkill but here are the specs:
Intel Core i7-4790k @ 4.0 ghz stock speed
Sabertooth z97 motherboard
16gb of ram
Geforce gtx 980
740gb of ssd
1tb hard drive

and my audio interface is a scarlet 2i2

Im pretty set on the production machine but only thing that gets me is portability since I don't own a laptop. I get so frustrated with the limited computing power by laptops--the specs i would be satisfied with are just way too expensive..

Kind of surprised to see you say it starts to get choppy on you with even smaller projects, since you're on AMD processor that's more powerful than mine. Do you do anything to maximize your processing power during a session?
There isn't usually too much happening in my projects since i'm still learning, maybe 20 or 30 layers with 3-4 Sylenth1, some automations and loads of effects in the mixer from eq to reverb and more. A friend told me that it might be a problem in the installation of the drivers so i'll try installing everything again.

Kinda late here, but FYI, running 20-30 "layers" or tracks on MIDI will kill the CPU. Bounce those to audio to free up CPU on your current system.

Due to work I need to be pretty mobile ... so 2.6GHz quadcore i7 MSI laptop, 16GB Ram, little Focusrite interface. ...and I'm good. :)

Hows that MSI working out for you? Thinking about going all in and buying one in the next couple months.

It has it's flaws and it's advantages. It's plasticky, kind of cheaper built. (Not a fancy model to be honest, though. They make sturdier ones.) I had to have a fan replaced after a year. But it has great CPU for the price. That was the main target. Also when you want to clean the cooling or re-paste it, it's question of three screews. I love that. Other manufacturers tend to stop you by need of dismounting the whole chassis. Not the case here.
