Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Re: How Do You Improve???
« on: May 10, 2017, 02:13:33 am »
Did the survey!

I feel like improvement happens when there's consistency (practicing/creating everyday or on a schedule), confidence, and openness. The consistency and being open to try new things are obvious points, but by pushing through those moments when you know some tracks won't be released, live up to their full potential, won't be finished, etc. and resolving to make the best stuff you possibly can, there's no way you can plateau (at least not for long).

I know you'll get your data from the survey, but doesn't hurt to discuss this with more people

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: Analog Synths and USB Midi

1. Using a usb cable would not transfer the audio over to the DAW (someone correct me if I'm wrong on that). It will send over the digital signals instead. If you want to get the audio, you'll have to use a midi in/out cable and plug that into your interface.

2. Using midi in/out cable. By going directly through the interface, you don't have to worry about latency. You'll notice that the notes don't always line up with the appropriate timing when you use a usb cable.

I'm not very knowledgeable in the world of preamps to be honest, but I feel like if you have an interface that has midi in/out ports, you don't need the preamp. (There are interfaces with built-in preamps though, so you could probably look into that.) Sorry I couldn't help with the last two questions.

The bass sounds more saw than square to me, just lowpassed. Give it a shot! I may try to make that bass myself, so then I can be of some more used to you ;D

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Distortion until the Drums kick in

I'm guessing that the distortion is still there even when other elements come in. Just because their volumes are greater than the bit of distortion doesn't mean it's completely gone away. Try exporting the file and see if you can still hear the problem. If not, maybe the speakers are just bad. Otherwise, you'll have to go back and keep trying to EQ it out. Maybe try other kicks to see if it's an FL problem rather than the sample you used? Assuming it's not a sample and it's made from a vst, mess around with the sound's settings to get rid of the sound.

Try layering your bass with different frequencies if you haven't already. The bass in the song reminds me of a moog, so maybe you can try making one or taking a preset and layering it with sub, low, and/or low-mid sounds. I'm sure you already have, but keep messing with the EQ in that range.

The Tweakbench Nintendo plugins are awesome for producers just starting out. I used it a lot before I got Super Audio Cart. Not a lot of depth but very simple and it doesn't take that long to get sounds you want. Triforce has your square, saw, and triangle waves and offers a bit of manipulation; Peach has random sounds from various NES games, which is fun to play around with; and Toad is a drumkit. If you're into 8-bit music or like having a retro sound, those plugins are the way to go!

You can download the bundle for $5 if you want to support the dev that made the vsts, or you can download each individually for free.

Did I mention that it's free?

I had the same/a similar problem until fairly recently. I mix everything low so that I get some headroom for the master. I found that no matter what I did with my mastering chain, the track still came out low. My solution to this: I turned up the volume of my interface. It was probably sitting on less than 30% at all times. I turned the volume up but continued to mix low. I think (emphasis on think) this gave me a more accurate representation of the final volume when all was said and done. Maybe you can try something similar?

Bobby here! I've been producing for about 2 years now, and I came here hoping to learn and share this love of music. I don't have a category for my music, I just make what comes out of me. I'm influenced by hip hop/R&B, EDM, and VGM (which is a bunch of other genres within itself lol). Anyone want to chat, just hmu!
